HPMC Improve Adhesion

In different conditions,HPMC can affect the water retention of the product, such as mixing time, temperature, etherification degree, etc.

HPMC is used as dispersant, thickener and binder in building treatment.

  • It is mainly used in the moulding of cement mortar and gypsum products.
  • It is used in cement mortar to increase its cohesiveness, improve viscosity and shrinkage.
  • HPMC affects water retention in dry mixed masonry mortar.

The water retained by a certain amount of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose ether has enough time in the mortar to promote the continuous hydration of cement, so as to improve the adhesion between mortar and matrix.

  • HPMC particle size and mixing time affect water retention rate.

The water-holding capacity of mortar is largely controlled by the dissolution time. The finer cellulose dissolves faster, and the faster the water-holding capacity is.

For mechanized construction, due to time constraints, the choice of cellulose must be finer powder. For manual plastering, fine powder will do.

  • Hpmc etherification and temperature affect water retention rate.

The solubility and temperature of HPMC in water depend on the degree of etherification. So the higher the degree of etherification, the better the water retention of cellulose ether.

  • Effect of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose ether on consistency and slip resistance of mortar

The consistency and anti-sliding property of mortar are very important indexes, and suitable consistency and anti-sliding property are needed for thick layer construction and ceramic tile adhesives.

Testing method of consistency According to JG/J70-2009

  1. The consistency and anti-slide property are mainly realized by the viscosity and particle size of HPMC.
  2. With the increase of viscosity and content, the consistency of mortar increases.
  3. Therefore the finer the particle size, the faster the initial consistency of fresh mortar increases.
  • Effect of HPMC on the amount of air in the mortar

Due to the addition of HPMC in mortar, a certain amount of tiny, uniform and stable air bubbles are introduced into fresh mortar.

Because of the ball effect, the mortar has good workability, certainly reduces shrinkage and cracking of mortar, and improves the productivity of mortar.

Cellulose has the function of air entrainment. When adding cellulose, we should consider the content, viscosity (too high viscosity will affect the workability) and air entrainment.

Choose cellulose suitable for different mortars.
